چکیده

We are using a novel cellular diagnostic system (CDS) to assess the physiological statusof corals by assaying specific parameters of cellular physiology. In a recent series of papers, wedemonstrated how this technology can be used to characterize coral health. In laboratory studies, diagnostic cellular parameters distinguished the separate and combined effects of heat and lighton a star coral (Montastraea faveolata) and its symbiont (zooxanthellae), and provided evidencethat oxidative stress plays a central role in bleaching. In defined areas of south Florida (BiscayneNational Park) and the upper Florida Keys, colonies of M. annularis showed a strong correlationbetween oxidative stress parameters and bleaching. Under non-bleaching conditions, analysis ofthese colonies provided evidence for local stressor effects and possible types of stressors. Thusthe CDS is allowing us to (1) diagnose whether corals are physiologically stressed, (2)discriminate between global-level stressors (e.g., El Nino/La Nina effects) and local-levelstressors (e.g., agricultural runoff) and (3) possibly predict the condition of corals several monthsbefore more obvious symptoms appear (e.g., coral bleaching or coral death).

Effects of Combined Training on Progranulin, Glycosylated Hemoglobin, and Insulin Resistance in Overweight and Obese Women with Type 2 Diabetes

Introduction: Progranulin (PGRN) has been recently introduced as a new indicator of chronic inflammatory response in type 2 diabetes. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of combined training on serum levels of progranulin, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and insulin resistance in overweight and obese women with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: A total of 36 women were divi...

The Effects of Separate and Combined Stress during Pregnancy on Motor Learning of Offspring of Rats

Background & Aims: Today, due to the modern industrial life of human beings, stress has become prevalent among them and they will suffer from its complications. Exposure to stress during pregnancy can change many babies' normal physiological processes. The separate and combined effects of three common types of prenatal stress were investigated on motor learning of male offspring of rats. Method...

Combined Effects of Retinoic Acid and Hydro-Alcoholic Extract of Rosa Damascena Mill on Wound in Diabetic Rats

Retinoic acid and Rosa damascena are compounds that have considerable effects in the cellular proliferation and synthesis of extracellular matrix. The present study was designed to assess the combined effects of retinoic acid and Rosa damascena mill on wound in diabetic rats. Seventy-two rats were used in this study. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (...

Designing a tool to identify and prioritize the effects of construction and operation phases of combined cycle power plants on physical health

Background and Objective: Given the nature of many development projects, it is necessary to evaluate their effects on human health. Due to the lack of a specific model, the purpose of this study was to provide a tool to prioritize the effects of construction and operation (C&O) of a combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) on physical health. Materials and Methods: By reviewing the documents and in...

HALL AND LON-SLIP EFFECTS ON MAGNETO-MICROPOLAR FLUID WITH COMBINED FORCED AND FREE CONVECTION IN BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW OVER A HORIZONTAL PLATE WITH VISCOUS DISSIPATION

In this paper, we study the effects of Hall and ion-slip currents on the steady magneto-micropolar of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid over a horizontal plate by taking in to account the viscous dissipation effects. By means of similarity solutions, deviation of fundamental equations on the assumption of small magnetic Reynolds number are solved numerically by using qu...
